Treasures of Time Unveiled: 14th-Century Castle Rediscovered Beneath French Hotel

In a riveting archaeological discovery, remnants of a majestic 14th-century medieval castle, complete with a moat, have been unearthed beneath the courtyard of a historic hotel in France. The revelation, which includes a treasure trove of artifacts like jewelry, padlocks, and kitchenware, offers a tantalizing glimpse into the lives of nobility who once resided within the castle’s formidable walls.

The intriguing saga began in the spring of 2023 when archaeologists from the French National Institute of Preventive Archaeological Research (INRAP) embarked on excavations within the Lagorce Hotel’s courtyard and cellars. Situated in Vannes, along the picturesque Brittany coast, this unassuming hotel belied the rich historical tapestry concealed beneath its surface. What emerged from the depths of time was the medieval Château de l’Hermine, a fortress and residence for none other than John IV, Duke of Brittany, during the 14th century.

Brittany’s evolution from a Viking-torn region to a flourishing feudal state under hereditary dukes like John IV set the stage for the castle’s construction in 1381. The stronghold’s strategic significance endured until its gradual decline, marked by the relocation of the duchy’s capital by Francis II in the 15th century. Over subsequent centuries, the castle underwent transformations, morphing into a hotel, law school, and government offices, each layer of history adding depth to its narrative.

INRAP’s meticulous excavations unveiled the castle’s formidable foundations, showcasing its sprawling dimensions of 138 ft in length and 56 ft in width, with walls up to 18 ft thick. Inside, remnants of grandeur emerged – ornate molding, ceremonial staircases, and lavishly adorned door jambs spoke of a bygone era’s opulence and architectural prowess.

Yet, it was the artifacts that truly brought the castle’s story to life. Coins, utensils, wooden bowls, and barrel components unearthed from the castle’s depths painted a vivid picture of daily life within its walls. The moat, once a testament to the castle’s fortified nature, yielded a treasure trove of jewelry, keys, metal dishes, and padlocks, further accentuating the castle’s grandeur and strategic importance.

The significance of John IV’s vision and resources in constructing such a monumental structure was underscored by INRAP’s findings. The castle’s construction in a single phase attests to the magnitude of financial and human investment poured into its creation, a testament to John IV’s ability to mobilize the finest talents of his time.

In unveiling the secrets of Château de l’Hermine, archaeologists have not only illuminated a slice of medieval history but also paid homage to the indomitable spirit of an era long past, resonating through the artifacts and architectural marvels that have withstood the test of time.
